The declining rate of foreign BO is worrying

For the past few years, the nation’s capital market has been in a recession. The country’s political instability coupled with the global economic crisis prevents the capital market from recovering from this recession. In this case, investors have opened 4.94 percent fewer beneficial owner (BO) accounts this year than they did last year. But throughout the year, the number of BO accounts opened by both domestic and foreign investors has dropped alarmingly.

The data indicates that a downward trend was caused in 2020 by the global pandemic of Corona infection. Following that, the capital market began to revert to a somewhat normal state; however, starting in the second week of October 2021, the market began to exhibit a downward trend once more. Then, starting in early 2022, a number of problems, including the worldwide recession, made the capital market recession worse. And since then, it took until the end of this year for the nation’s capital market to emerge from the persistent recession.

Despite taking a number of steps, the regulatory body Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) was unable to reverse the recession. Thus, from January 1 to December 15 of this year, the number of BO accounts fell by 5.27 percent as a result of the capital market’s downward trend and other factors. Simultaneously, there were 5.02 percent fewer BO accounts held by male investors. There was a 6.03 percent decrease in the quantity of BO accounts opened by female investors. Furthermore, there was a decline of 4.94 percent in the quantity of BO accounts owned by local investors and a 15.44 percent decrease in the quantity of BO accounts owned by foreign investors.
