The per capita debt in the country is more than lakhs of Taka.

At present, Bangladesh’s debt to various domestic and foreign organizations and institutions is more than Tk 18 lakh crore. This money should be paid through the budget. And the budget is financed by people’s tax money.

The latest data of BBS census and house census says that the total population of the country has increased to 17 crore 15 lakh 90 thousand. At present, the total debt of the country is 18 lakh 35 thousand crores. Accordingly, if we divide the total population of the country with the status debt, the per capita debt stands at 1 lakh 6 thousand 999 taka. In other words, due to the loan taken by the government, every citizen has a debt of about 1 lakh 7 thousand taka. The child born today will not be left out.

Apart from this, the data of the final report of BBS Household Income-Expenditure Survey-2022 says that an average person takes a loan of 17 thousand 366 taka to meet the family expenses. Accordingly, if the government’s per capita debt and personal average debt are calculated together, the average debt of a person stands at Tk 1 lakh 24 thousand 365.

Meanwhile, according to the data of the Department of Economic Relations, at the end of the fiscal year 2023-24, the accumulated foreign debt of the government stood at 6 thousand 790 billion dollars. As such, at present every citizen of the country has an average foreign debt of 400 dollars, which is 47 thousand 200 taka in local currency.
