The passports of 9 BSEC officials including Shibli Rubaiyat have been cancelled

The passports of nine officials, including former chairman Professor Shibli Rubaiyat-ul-Islam and former commissioner Sheikh Shamsuddin Ahmed, of the stock market regulator Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), have been cancelled. At the same time, a ban has been imposed on them to leave the country.

The passports of seven other officials whose passports have been cancelled are: Executive Directors Mahbubul Alam, Saifur Rahman, Rezaul Karim; Directors Sheikh Mahbub-ur-Rahman, Mohammad Mahmudul Haque; Additional Director SK Md. Lutful Kabir and Joint Director Md. Rashidul Alam.

The Home Ministry cancelled the passports of these nine officials last week and imposed a ban on them to leave the country, a source told the media.

Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and fled the country on August 5 in the face of violent student and public protests. In the changed situation, his close confidant Shibli Rubaiyat-ul-Islam resigned from the post of BSEC Chairman.

Earlier, despite the opposition of the stock market participants, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reappointed Shibli Rubaiyat for a 4-year term on May 28, 2024. Earlier, on May 17, 2020, he was appointed as the BSEC Chairman for the first time.

Earlier, on October 9 last year, a ban was imposed on Professor Shibli Rubaiyat-ul-Islam to leave the country. The Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court imposed this ban. The ban was imposed in response to the application of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
