The government’s bank debt has doubled in the first quarter.

In the first three months of the current fiscal year, July-September, the government’s bank debt has almost doubled compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year. This information is known according to the report of Bangladesh Bank.

According to the data of the central bank, the government borrowed Tk. 47 thousand 209 crores from the commercial banks through the sale of various term treasury bills and bonds. At the end of the same period of the last financial year, the government’s borrowing from commercial banks was Tk. 24 thousand 474 crores.

Government borrowing from commercial banks has almost doubled in the first three months of the current financial year as compared to the same period of the previous financial year due to lower revenue.

However, the central bank said that the government is mainly paying off the central bank’s debt by borrowing.

In the first three months of the current financial year, the Central Bank has repaid Tk. 42,794 crore.
