The Tariff Commission has proposed to reduce the existing tariff on potatoes, onions and eggs in view of the rising inflation in the country, negative impact on the supply of daily necessities due to floods. In a recent letter, the Tariff Commission has recommended this to the NBR.
On Tuesday (September 3), the NBR sources revealed this information.
According to the Tariff Commission sources, 6-7 tons of onions are imported in the country, but eggs and potatoes are not imported without special permission. Revenue is collected from onion but not much revenue is collected from other two products. Although at present import of potatoes and eggs is allowed subject to conditions. In this situation, in the letter, the commission has asked for complete withdrawal of 5 percent customs duty (CD) and 5 percent regulatory duty or regulatory duty (RD) on onion at the import stage.
At present, there is a 10 percent tariff on onions and 33 percent on egg and potato imports. Besides, reduction of CD from 25 percent to 5 percent and withdrawal of 3 percent RD in eggs and potatoes has been requested. When a letter was sent to NBR on August 29, NBR could not take a final decision on the matter.
It is known that considering the flood and price inflation, the import duty on potato and onion may be reduced. NBR may issue a notification soon after discussing this. On the other hand marginal farmers involved in egg production. Farmers have been greatly affected by the floods. In that case, NBR will take a decision about the egg after considering all aspects.
