Sunamganj police seized 193 tons smuggled sugar since 2022

Indian sugar worth tens of billions of taka are being smuggled through the borders of two upazilas of the Sunamganj district of Sylhet division of Bangladesh every day.
According to the record with the Sunamganj district police, some 193 metric tons of sugar worth about Tk 1 crore 93 lakh, have been seized in Sunamganj during special operations of the police from 2022 to November of this year. Police arrested 197 smugglers were arrested and cases were filed against them.
Illegal stocks of Indian sugar stocks go to different parts of the country every day through Abdus Jahur Bridge on Surma River in Baithakhali area of Sunamganj.
Local people told Business Mirror that every night smugglers take out 8 to 10 trucks, each carrying 300 sacks of Indian sugar, from several border areas including Dhanpur, Chikarkandi, Baghber, Chengbil, Sharifganj, Maturkandi. They also noted that a gang of smugglers escort, by motorcycles, these illegal Indian sugar carrying trucks to Hasanraja Toran, the entrance of Sunamganj town.
