Shop employees demand Eid bonus, rationing system

Special Correspondent:
Shop employees across Bangladesh have demanded the payment of their Eid bonus and the introduction of a rationing system before Eid-ul-Fitr.
The demand was made at a human chain organized by the National Shop Employees Federation in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Speakers at the event said that around 60 lakh shop employees work in 10 sectors, including shops, shopping malls, chain shops, departmental stores, retail shops, wholesale, electrical shops, salons, beauty parlors, and drug stores.
“But unfortunately, there is no minimum wage board for these 60 lakh shop employees,” said Rafiqul Islam Babu, president of the National Shop Employees Federation. “Shop employees are also deprived of legal rights and benefits such as one and a half days weekly leave, appointment letter, identity card, overtime allowance for overtime work, salary and allowance within 7 working days, festival bonus, etc.”
The speakers said that shop employees work day and night during the month of Ramadan but do not receive their due Eid bonus in most cases.
“The skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, the rise in the prices of gas, electricity and water, the rise in house rent, transportation costs and medical expenses have left these workers helpless,” they said. “In this situation, if a rationing system is introduced for shop employees, they will at least have a chance to survive.”
The speakers strongly demanded the payment of salary and allowance and Eid bonus to 60 lakh shop employees across the country before Eid and the introduction of a rationing system for shop employees.
The human chain was presided over by Rafiqul Islam Babu, president of the National Shop Employees Federation. Amirul Haque Amin, general secretary of the federation, spoke as the chief guest.
Other speakers included Hazrat Ali Mollah, Rafiqul Islam, Miss Sima Akhter, Md. Didar Hossain, Jahangir and Mustafa Kamal, coordinator of UNIBLSE.
