Sammilito Islami Bank Invests Tk 10,000 Crore in Govt Sukuk

B Mirror Report : Sammilito Islami Bank PLC has taken a major step in strengthening the Islamic banking sector of Bangladesh by investing Tk 10,000 crore in the Bangladesh Government Special Sukuk-1.

According to an official statement, this marks the highest amount ever invested by a single bank in a government-issued Sukuk.

The investment was formally completed at a ceremony held today, during which Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman handed over the Sukuk certificate to Sammilito Islami Bank Chairman Dr. Mohammad Ayub Miah.

Officials from Bangladesh Bank’s Debt Management Department and senior executives of Sammilito Islami Bank were also present at the event.

The Sukuk, structured in compliance with Shariah principles, was issued through a private placement and is backed by selected government assets. These include seven residential projects for government employees developed by the Public Works Department, along with specified railway services operated by Bangladesh Railway.

The bank stated that the investment will provide multiple benefits. It will be considered eligible for maintaining the Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR) and can also be used to access liquidity facilities from Bangladesh Bank if required.

Moreover, the Sukuk is transferable, allowing the bank to trade or transfer ownership through its management at any time.

Under the terms of the investment, Sammilito Islami Bank will earn a semi-annual return at a profit rate of 9.72%.
