Road Encroachment on Madani Avenue Puts Pedestrians at Risk

B.Mirror Desk: Space constraints on the capital’s roads have become a daily ordeal. However, the situation on the 100-foot-wide Madani Avenue in the Bhatara Police Station area is particularly alarming.
A significant portion of this wide road has effectively become unusable due to encroachment by street vendors, the unrestricted movement of battery-operated auto-rickshaws, and haphazard parking. Locals allege that with nearly 90 feet of the road occupied, only about 10 feet remain for vehicular movement in some places. This leads to traffic congestion and accident risks, causing daily suffering for pedestrians and passengers.
On-the-spot observations reveal that vendor stalls have expanded beyond the footpaths onto the main roadway itself. In some areas, temporary shops and businesses have been set up in three to four rows. Consequently, there is insufficient space for the normal flow of traffic on this 100-foot-wide road. With a large section occupied, vehicles are forced to navigate through a narrow space, a major cause of traffic jams during peak hours.
Pedestrians face the greatest difficulty as both the road and the footpaths are encroached upon. Lacking designated walking space, many are forced to walk alongside moving vehicles or directly on the main road. This increases risks for women, children, and the elderly. Walking safely becomes even more difficult, especially during the evening and night when pedestrian traffic increases.
Unregulated movement of battery-operated auto-rickshaws and other small vehicles is another major cause of congestion. Drivers of these vehicles are frequently seen abruptly changing lanes, driving against the flow of traffic, stopping haphazardly, and picking up or dropping off passengers in the middle of the road. This disrupts the normal flow of other vehicles and raises the risk of sudden collisions and accidents.
Compounding these issues is the problem of illegal parking. Various vehicles, including private cars and auto-rickshaws, are frequently seen parked along the sides of the road, near entrances, and at intersections. The effective width of the road has been further reduced due to encroachment by street vendors and unregulated parking. Consequently, vehicles face long delays even when covering short distances.
This situation causes daily hardship for office-goers, students, local residents, and those commuting to various establishments. Beyond the inability to reach destinations on time, the safe movement of pedestrians is also being compromised. The current state of the road raises concerns regarding both normal traffic flow and overall public safety.
Local residents fear that if the road remains constricted in this manner, it could severely hinder the movement of emergency service vehicles. Delays in the arrival of ambulances, fire service units, or police vehicles at a scene could exacerbate the consequences of emergencies. Traffic congestion poses a particularly significant obstacle when rushing critically ill patients to the hospital.
Residents have demanded the immediate removal of encroachments from the 100-foot Madani Avenue, the restoration of footpaths for pedestrian use, a halt to illegal parking, and the regulation of battery-operated auto-rickshaws. They believe that temporary eviction drives alone will not solve the problem; instead, regular monitoring, effective law enforcement, and the establishment of order in road management are required. If the relevant authorities take appropriate action, it will be possible to restore normal traffic flow and ensure pedestrian safety.
