The rising dollar exchange rate in Bangladesh is making life difficult for buyers, as prices of imported goods, including popular items like cameras, action cameras, and DSLRs, are on the rise. Most of these products come from other countries, and transactions with foreign nations are done in dollars, causing a gradual increase in camera prices.
Photographer Rohan Ahmed expressed his concern, saying: “Over the past 5-6 years, I have used various cameras, but currently, the prices of cameras and related gadgets seem significantly higher.” He added that in the era of digitalization, the expectation is for digital products to become more affordable, but the camera market and other imported products in Bangladesh tell a different story, with prices soaring higher than before.
Adnan Hossain, a Customer Executive at Gadget & Gear Mohammadpur Tokyo Square branch, shared: “Customers come here to buy cameras, but everyone is expressing their frustration over the high camera prices.” He further mentioned, “As sellers, we also share the disappointment, but it’s a result of the increased dollar exchange rate.”
These products are mainly imported from countries such as China, the US, and various European nations, with transactions conducted in dollars, contributing to the elevated prices.
A sales representative from The Gimbal Shop in Mirpur highlighted: “If we compare the prices of cameras or gimbals from two years ago, we can observe a noticeable increase. The rising dollar exchange rate against the BDT is the cause of this price surge.”
Despite various measures taken by the Bangladesh Bank in the past year to stabilize the forex market, such as implementing multiple exchange rate mechanisms and penalizing banks for selling dollars at higher prices, the efforts have not been successful. This has impacted inflation and failed to stabilize the dwindling foreign exchange reserves.
Renowned filmmaker and cinematographer Akash Baghchi remarked: “Bangladesh authorities should intervene to control the camera market, especially considering the growing interest of the new generation in photography and filmmaking. Nurturing this sector is crucial for the technical growth of Bangladesh.” He stated in his remarks that the central bank decisions have not been effective in solving this problem, leading to an increase in the tech market.
The rising camera prices are not only a financial burden for consumers but also a potential barrier to entry for aspiring creators. As the demand for photography and filmmaking skills continues to grow, it is crucial to address this issue to ensure that everyone has access to the tools and resources they need to develop their talents.
