Response from Union Bank PLC Regarding the News Published in Daily Prothom Alo

BMirror Desk :

On October 6, 2024, Union Bank PLC strongly condemns and protests against the news titled “Union Bank: Mysterious Banking Activity with Cash Transactions Before Elections” published in Daily Prothom Alo

The information presented in the report is baseless. The management of Union Bank believes that many details in Prothom Alo’s report have been distorted and exaggerated. We are concerned to observe that Prothom Alo is consistently publishing misleading and incorrect information against Union Bank. We do not expect such continuous propaganda from a responsible media outlet in the country. Recently, the banking sector has been going through a very dangerous and crisis-prone time. Bangladesh Bank is playing a historic role in reforming this sector. At this time, all parties in society need to take a responsible stance. Otherwise, not only will the banking sector be harmed, but the economy will also face a disaster.

The published report alleges that the bank’s MD, A B M Mokammel Haque Chowdhury, is involved in opening a bank account for an entity named “Mostak Traders.” In response, Union Bank’s management states that the decision to open an account at a branch level should not reach the MD. According to banking norms, customer bank accounts are opened following standard procedures. Customers conduct transactions based on their own needs. Additionally, accounts are closed following the proper procedures based on customer requests. These are normal banking practices. The allegation in Prothom Alo’s report that information about that account has been deleted from the server is also false and misleading.

Transaction information cannot be deleted from the server. If information is deleted, where did the reporter obtain that information? The claim that the reporter made multiple visits to the bank and attempted to contact A B M Mokammel Haque Chowdhury but could not reach him is also not true. Union Bank’s management believes that the depositors’ money in this bank is safe.
