Reforms like blood circulation for economy: Debapriya

B Mirror Report: Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, Convenor of the Citizen’s Platform for SDG Implementation and Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), has compared economic reforms to blood circulation in the human body, emphasizing that continuous reform is essential to keep the economy dynamic.

He made the remarks at an event titled “Signing of MoU between Citizen’s Platform and ERF and the Relevance of Bangladesh Reform Tracker and Media,” held on Thursday at the Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) auditorium in Paltan, Dhaka.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahid Uddin Swapan attended the event as the chief guest, while ERF President Daulat Akter Mala chaired the program. Other speakers included Editors’ Council President and New Age Editor Nurul Kabir, The Financial Express Editor Shamsul Haque Zahid, and Prothom Alo Head of Online Shaukat Hossain.

Dr. Bhattacharya said reforms are not a one-time or static process but an ongoing effort necessary for sustained economic progress.

“Just as blood circulation is vital for the human body, reforms are indispensable for economic growth and transformation,” he said, adding that reforms should never be seen as complete or final.

He also rejected the idea that the reform process ended or remained incomplete with the previous government’s tenure, calling it a misconception. “The real challenge is to carry reforms forward into the future,” he added.

He warned that any slowdown in reform efforts could weaken economic momentum.

Dr. Bhattacharya further said the importance of reforms has become more evident in the current context, not only for economic advancement but also for overall structural development, stressing the need to strengthen and continue reform initiatives in the coming days.
