B Mirror Report : The Maitree Super Thermal Power Project at Rampal in Bagerhat has recorded the highest electricity generation among independent power producers (IPPs) for the second consecutive month, exporting 640 million units (MU) of power to the national grid in December 2025.
According to official data, Maitree contributed 11.5 percent of the country’s total net electricity generation of 5,531 million units during the month, highlighting the plant’s sustained operational efficiency and reliability.
Fuel security at the coal-fired power plant has also improved significantly. Over the past two months, around 800,000 metric tonnes of coal were unloaded, while the plant maintained a reserve stock of nearly 200,000 tonnes. This has ensured uninterrupted power generation ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.
The Maitree Super Thermal Power Project was developed under Bangladesh–India bilateral cooperation and operates using imported coal. The plant employs advanced ultra-supercritical technology, which enhances efficiency while reducing emissions. Its environmental protection measures include flue gas desulphurisation units, electrostatic precipitators, a 275-metre-high chimney, closed-cycle cooling systems, and a zero-liquid-discharge mechanism.
Despite its dependence on imported fuel, the project’s large scale, consistent performance, and strengthened fuel logistics have helped ensure a stable and comparatively lower-cost electricity supply to the national grid. This has played a key role in supporting industrial activity and strengthening the country’s overall energy security.
R Sarangapani, Managing Director of Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Limited (BIFPCL), and Ramanath Pujari, Project Director, praised the dedication and hard work of the BIFPCL team. They expressed optimism that the same commitment would continue in contributing to national development and energy stability.
