Public vigilance can dismantle syndicates: Commerce Minister

BM Report:

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi has asserted that syndicates operating in various sectors can be effectively countered by an alert and vigilant public. He emphasized that consumer awareness and active engagement can disrupt the activities of these groups.

Munshi’s remarks came during the grand finale and prize distribution ceremony of a consumer rights awareness debate competition, held at BFDC auditorium on Saturday and arranged by Debate for Democracy. He highlighted the impact of public scrutiny on egg prices, which dropped significantly following the import of a relatively small quantity of eggs.

While acknowledging the existence of syndicates, Munshi expressed confidence that their influence can be diminished if consumers remain informed and proactive. He urged the public to stay vigilant and demand fair pricing practices.

In addressing the issue of beef prices, Munshi indicated that imports could bring down prices to Tk 400-450 per kg. However, he emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting the interests of local farmers and reiterated that beef imports are not currently being considered.

Munshi’s comments underscore the importance of consumer involvement in curbing market manipulation and promoting fair trade practices. He encouraged the private sector to act responsibly and prioritize consumer interests to foster a stable and equitable market environment.

Cumilla Victoria Government College became the champion after defeating Eden Women’s College in the grand final of the competition.

Debate for Democracy Chairman Hasan Ahmed Chy Kiron presided over the program.
