B Mirror Report: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday said crime control would become much easier if strong trust and cooperation could be established between the police and the public.
Speaking at the police “Welfare Parade” held at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium marking Police Week 2026, the Prime Minister urged police members to act professionally, avoid harassment of innocent citizens and strengthen people’s confidence in law enforcement.
“The police administration does not belong to any political party. It must operate according to the law,” he said, adding that ensuring innocent people are not harassed is a major responsibility of the force.
Tarique Rahman, who is also chairman of the ruling BNP, said the success of the police lies in becoming a symbol of trust and security for ordinary people, noting that the success of the police also reflects the success of the government.
He emphasized that the relationship between police and citizens should be based on trust and mutual dependence so that people see police stations as reliable shelters during crises and emergencies.
Highlighting the role of police stations as the first point of legal support for citizens, the Prime Minister said people usually seek police assistance only when they are in trouble. Therefore, it is important to create an environment where citizens feel their problems will be addressed with humanity and fairness.
While stressing the importance of taking legal action when necessary, he also called on police officers to demonstrate compassion in dealing with the public.
The Prime Minister described police personnel as the government’s representatives at the grassroots level, saying they play a crucial role in maintaining law and order, ensuring public safety and delivering justice through quick decisions and professional skills.
He alleged that the previous government had used the police force for narrow political interests, placing law enforcement against the people. Now, he said, the force has an opportunity to rebuild public confidence and move forward in a democratic environment.
According to the Prime Minister, building a skilled, modern and technology-driven police force with humane values has become essential in the current global context. He said the government has already begun working toward that goal and assured police members that their demands would be considered positively within the government’s capacity.
Tarique Rahman also said the government wants to create a police service environment where citizens can file complaints directly without intermediaries and receive prompt assistance without fear.
He stressed that maintaining law and order is impossible without public cooperation and encouraged police members to expand people-oriented initiatives such as community policing and Open House Day programs.
Reaffirming the government’s tough stance against drugs, terrorism and corruption, the Prime Minister expressed concern over crimes including violence against women and children, child marriage, robbery, organized crime, juvenile gangs, financial fraud and online gambling.
He called on police to intensify anti-drug operations by targeting both drug suppliers and the sources of narcotics through strict enforcement of the law.
