The program was held on Thursday (August 22) in the capital Dhaka. The company’s officers and employees and general investors participated in it.
It is known that National Tea Company Chairman Sheikh Kabir Hossain is a relative of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. As a result, it has been alleged that he has committed unlimited irregularities-corruption and looting with the opportunity of power. In addition, Sheikh Kabir has appointed five people from his own district Gopalganj as directors to keep the monopoly power in check. These directors are – Md. Mostafizur Rahman, Md. Abul Hossain, Chowdhury Nafiz Sarafat, M Atif Khaled and Mizanur Rahman Khan.
Sources say that on October 6, 2021, Brigadier General Md. joined the company as an independent director. Zahidur Rahman and Dhaka University Marketing Department Professor Dr. Razia Begum Later, Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) nominated former Divisional Special Judge Mizanur Rahman Khan to the National T in March last year. Three independent directors were appointed under the guidance of former chairman Shibli Rubaiyat.
Besides, the agitators alleged that the CFO of National Tea Company, Keramat Ali, created a syndicate and committed corruption and looting in the National Tea Company.
According to DSE sources, National T, which was listed in the stock market in 1979, is currently in the ‘Z’ category. The company has been incurring huge losses due to various irregularities for the past five years. The company’s loss per share was Rs 96 at the end of the last financial year 2023. Even in the first 9 months of this year, the company posted a loss of Tk 104 per share.
