Proposal to seize Beximco assets to pay workers’ salaries

Trusted financial sector analyst Mamun Rashid said that in view of the ongoing dissatisfaction of workers over salaries of Beximco Group factories, if necessary, the company’s other assets and bank accounts should be acquired to pay the workers their fair dues. He also suggested taking punitive action against those who took loans by giving false information and using influence.

In addition, Mamun Rashid commented that although investment in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant was encouraged for political purposes during the Awami League regime, Saudi Arabia’s Aramco, Korea’s Samsung and Amazon could not invest in Bangladesh. He also mentioned that Ittehad and Facebook have curtailed their investments due to the dollar crisis.

Mamun Rashid said these things at a shadow parliament titled “The Challenge of Foreign Investment” organized by Debate for Democracy. He said that campaigning like road shows alone is not enough to attract foreign investment, but it is also necessary to establish good governance in investment management by appointing honest and competent people.

Debate for Democracy Chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiran presided over the event and highlighted various problems in Bangladesh regarding foreign investment. He said that foreign investors are not interested in investing in Bangladesh due to dollar crisis, high interest rates, political instability, bribery and corruption.

In addition, he made some recommendations to attract foreign investment, such as:

– Ensuring investment security,

– Removing bureaucratic complications,

– Improving the quality of education to produce skilled workers,

– Tax and customs exemptions and stopping corruption,

– Good governance and freedom from political influence in the investment structure.

In addition, he requested the government to take punitive measures, so that strict action is taken against those who have created a confusing situation by giving false information in the past.

In addition, Dhaka International University and Daffodil International University jointly won the Shadow Parliament organized by Debate for Democracy.
