Production is being delayed further at Rooppur Power Plant

Power Grid Bangladesh PLC hopes to complete the transmission line for power supply from the first unit of the Rooppur Power Plant by next April. After the line is commissioned, it may take at least two months to start power production in Rooppur. Experimental power production may start in July. After that, after various tests, commercial power supply may start next year.

Concerned people say that the time of power supply from the Rooppur Power Plant is being delayed again and again. Production from the first unit was supposed to start in December 2023. It was postponed to December 2024. Now it is being delayed further. And power production from the second unit was supposed to start in December 2024. It was postponed to 2025. However, power production from it may start in 2027.

Responsible officials of the Rooppur Power Plant say that tests were conducted by inserting ‘dummy’ fuel into the reactor vessel last September. The start of power generation now entirely depends on the transmission line. Nuclear fuel will be introduced two months after the transmission line is built. It takes a month for the fuel to enter. After that, power generation will start gradually. At the same time, various types of tests will be conducted. After completing all the tests, commercial power generation from the first unit in Rooppur may start next year. However, this cannot be confirmed yet.
