Triggering Tsunami Warning and Evacuation Orders
BM Desk:
A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck central Japan on Monday, triggering a tsunami warning and prompting mass evacuations in the Noto region of Ishikawa prefecture. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the epicenter of the quake shortly after 4:10 pm local time (0710 GMT), reports state run news agency.
National broadcaster NHK issued urgent evacuation orders, urging residents in the affected area to move to higher ground immediately. Local authorities deployed emergency personnel and activated disaster response protocols.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas along Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama prefectures, advising residents to stay away from the coastline and move to higher ground. Initial reports indicated waves of up to 1.2 meters could hit the coast.
The full extent of the damage and casualties is still unclear as communication channels in the affected area are experiencing disruptions. Search and rescue operations are underway, and authorities are urging residents to follow official instructions and remain calm.
Japan lies on the “Ring of Fire,” a zone of intense seismic activity, and experiences frequent earthquakes. The country has strict building codes and disaster preparedness measures in place, but powerful earthquakes can still cause significant damage and loss of life.
Nations around the world are closely monitoring the situation and offering assistance if needed. Japan has not yet requested international aid, but the global community stands ready to support the country’s recovery efforts.
