PM to expand basic services to ease Dhaka pressure

B Mirror Report: Prime Minister Tarek Rahman has said the government will gradually expand basic services across the country to reduce pressure on the capital, Dhaka.

He made the remarks on Wednesday while responding to a supplementary question during the 24th sitting of the first session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.

In his question, Cumilla-9 MP Md. Abul Kalam emphasized the need for coordinated initiatives to make Dhaka a more livable and modern city and sought to know whether the government plans to decentralize administrative and economic activities to curb migration to the capital.

In response, the Prime Minister said the concentration of employment, education, and healthcare services in Dhaka has developed over many years, making it the main destination for people seeking better opportunities.

He noted that insufficient facilities in other parts of the country have driven people to the capital for jobs, education, and medical services.

Describing the issue as a long-term challenge, Tarek Rahman said the government aims to gradually build employment opportunities, quality educational institutions, and healthcare services across all regions.

He added that steps are being taken to establish special industrial zones in different parts of the country, alongside improving healthcare and education facilities nationwide.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that expanding such services outside Dhaka would reduce the flow of people to the capital and help ease its growing pressure over time.
