Onion prices stable despite rise in eggs and poultry

Egg and broiler chicken prices have increased in Dhaka’s retail markets over the past week, while onion prices have remained stable, according to a market survey conducted on Friday.

Traders said the price of eggs has risen by Tk10-15 per dozen compared with last week. Farm brown eggs are now selling at Tk130 per dozen, while white broiler eggs are priced at Tk120, up from Tk110-120 a week earlier.

Egg trader Mamun Ali attributed the increase to higher wholesale prices, noting that brown eggs are currently selling for Tk130 per dozen and white broiler eggs for Tk120.

Meat prices remained largely unchanged. Beef is selling at Tk750-800 per kg, mutton at Tk1,100-1,200, broiler chicken at Tk180-190, and Sonali chicken at around Tk330 per kg.

Fish prices continued to remain high, putting pressure on household budgets. Shrimp is selling for Tk600-800 per kg, pabda Tk300-400, large rohu Tk400-450, tangra Tk600-800, vetki Tk400-550, tilapia Tk220-230, pangas Tk200-220, mrigel Tk250-300, baim Tk600-800, koi Tk400-500, poa Tk260, and shol Tk700 per kg.

Hilsa prices also remain beyond the reach of many consumers. Hilsa weighing 800-900 grams is selling for Tk2,000-2,200 per kg, while one-kilogram fish are priced between Tk2,300 and Tk2,400.

However, prices of farmed koi, tilapia, pangas, and medium-sized rohu have remained relatively stable. Farmed shing fish is selling at Tk300-450 per kg, while medium-sized rohu is priced at Tk300-350. Premium fish varieties such as pomfret, shol, and river boal continue to cost over Tk1,000 per kg.

Traders said hilsa prices have risen significantly over the past three to four years due to demand consistently outpacing supply.

Meanwhile, prices of several vegetables have declined compared with last week. Small pointed gourd and sponge gourd now sell for Tk40-45 per kg, down from Tk50, while okra prices have fallen by Tk5-10 per kg. In contrast, long eggplant has increased to Tk80-90 per kg from Tk70-80, while round eggplant is selling at Tk90-100 per kg.

Other vegetable prices include bitter gourd at Tk50-70 per kg, green papaya Tk40-45, snake gourd Tk50-60, taro corms Tk65-70, and ash gourd at Tk40-60 per piece.

Onion prices remained stable at around Tk40 per kg, while the prices of lemons, green chilies, cucumbers, and several other daily essentials also remained largely unchanged.
