NBR’s Revenue Shortfall Stands at Tk 6,577 Crore in Two Months

Even after the movement came to a halt, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) failed to perform well in revenue collection. In the first two months (July–August) of the current fiscal year, there was a shortfall of Tk 6,577 crore in tax and duty collection.

Today, Sunday, the NBR published the updated revenue collection figures for July and August. According to the report, the revenue collection target for this period was Tk 61,000 crore. However, only Tk 54,423 crore was collected, resulting in a shortfall of Tk 6,577 crore.

Due to the NBR staff movement in May and June, there was a significant revenue shortfall at the end of the last fiscal year. Revenue collection fell short during the final two months due to various protest programs that disrupted collection activities. However, even in July and August, revenue collection failed to gain momentum.

Several NBR officials stated that following the movement, a sense of fear regarding suspensions and transfers is prevailing among the officials, which has led to reduced focus on revenue collection.

According to NBR’s breakdown, the highest amount of revenue in July–August came from VAT, which totaled Tk 22,437 crore. Customs brought in Tk 17,248 crore, while income tax revenue stood at Tk 14,738 crore.
