B Mirror Report : The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has reduced customs duties on imported mobile phones by 60 percent to make handsets more affordable for the general public.
According to an NBR notification, the duty on imported mobile phones has been cut from 25 percent to 10 percent. Officials said the move aims to expand access to digital services across the country while keeping prices within consumers’ purchasing capacity.
To support local assembly industries, customs duty on imported components has also been halved, from 10 percent to 5 percent, through a separate notification.
As a result, the price of imported mobile phones costing over Tk 30,000 is expected to drop by around Tk 5,500, while domestically assembled phones in the same category may see a reduction of about Tk 1,500.
The government expressed confidence that the duty cuts would help maintain affordable mobile phone prices and enhance digital inclusion for citizens, adding that efforts to ensure accessibility will continue.
