The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has made it easier for Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad to submit their income tax returns online. Previously, during registration on the e-return website, the OTP (One-Time Password) was sent only to a biometrically registered Bangladeshi mobile SIM, which created difficulties for expatriates.
From now on, the OTP will be sent to taxpayers’ email addresses, according to an NBR press release issued on Thursday (October 23).
The NBR stated that for the 2025–26 tax year, more than 850,000 taxpayers have already filed their returns online. Under a special order, NBR has made online filing mandatory for all individual taxpayers except those who are aged 65 or above, physically disabled, expatriate Bangladeshis, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh. However, exempted taxpayers may also file online if they wish.
To facilitate the process, expatriate taxpayers can now send their passport number, NID number, visa seal copy, email address, and a photo to ereturn@etaxnbr.gov.bd. After verification, the NBR will send an OTP and registration link to their email, allowing them to register and file tax returns online easily.
The NBR also clarified that no physical documents need to be uploaded during online filing; however, taxpayers should keep supporting documents safely for verification if required.
The NBR has requested both domestic and expatriate taxpayers to submit their 2025–26 income tax returns by November 30, 2025, using the e-return system.
