NBR Launches Automated Tax Credit System for Importers

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has implemented an automated system to directly credit income tax paid during the import stage to taxpayers’ electronic forms in an effort to streamline return filing and minimize importers’ ongoing problems.

According to an NBR press statement released today, the system was activated after the ASYCUDA World platform was successfully integrated with the NBR’s e-Return system.

The NBR stated that, for the convenience of taxpayers, effective integration between its e-return system and the ASYCUDA World system has been completed and officially launched. As a result, importer-taxpayers will no longer need to separately attach information or submit proof of income tax paid at the import stage.

According to the source, when importer-taxpayers enter their business income information in the e-return, complete details of the advance income tax paid against each bill of entry during the relevant income year will be automatically displayed in the system. The income tax paid at the import stage will be automatically adjusted against the taxpayer’s total payable income tax in the e-return, and the final tax liability will be determined accordingly.

This initiative has not only simplified the return-filing process for importing businesses but has also ended the long-standing administrative complexities and harassment related to income tax credit, observers believe.

On August 4, Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed inaugurated the online e-return filing process for the 2025–26 tax year through the website www.etaxnbr.gov.bd. Since the launch, more than 4.6 million taxpayers have registered with the e-return system, and nearly 3.3 million taxpayers have already submitted their e-returns. Taxpayers for whom e-return filing is not mandatory are also voluntarily submitting their returns online.

In the current tax year, the e-return system has also been opened to non-resident Bangladeshi taxpayers. According to NBR data, around 4,000 expatriate Bangladeshi taxpayers have so far filed their income tax returns for the 2025–26 tax year online through the e-return system. No documents or paperwork need to be uploaded when filing e-returns online. The NBR continues to expand its digital services to enable individual taxpayers to easily pay income tax and file returns from home.

The NBR has urged all individual taxpayers to submit their income tax returns for the 2025–26 tax year using the e-return system by January 31.
