A murder case has been filed against 154 people including a former railway minister,
MP, former deputy commissioner, police superintendent and seven to eight hundred
unidentified accused in Panchagarh. Confirming the matter on Tuesday, plaintiff's
lawyer Abdul Wahab Ansari said that the judge has taken cognizance of the case
and ordered the Sadar Police to investigate and register a case. Earlier, the case
was filed in the Panchagarh Amli Court last Monday. The plaintiff in the case is
Mosha Shirina Akhter, wife of the deceased Abdur Rashid Arefin of Chandanpara
area of Boda upazila. She has demanded that the accused be arrested and fair trial.
The accused are District Awami League President and former Railway Minister
Advocate Nurul Islam Sujan, District Awami League General Secretary Anwar Sadat
Samrat, former MP Naimuzzaman Bhuiyan Mukta, former MP Mazharul Haque
Prodhan, former Zilla Parishad Chairman Abdul Hannan Sheikh, former Deputy
Commissioner Zahurul Islam,Police Superintendent SM Sirajul Huda, then Additional
Police Superintendent Kanak Kumar Das and SM Shafiqul Islam, former Municipal
Mayor Zakia Khatun, former Officer-in-Charge of Panchagarh Sadar Police Station
Abdul Latif Miah, Upazila Parishad Chairman Amirul Islam, Vice Chairman Kazi Al
Tarek, Abu Toyabur Rahman, Mosharraf Hossain, Abdul Latif Tarin, and 154 others
with 700-800 names and 700-800 unknown names.
According to the case source, on December 24, 2022, the Bangladesh Nationalist
Party (BNP) was holding a sit-in and rally at the Panchagarh district party office as
part of its central program. The public, including leaders and activists of the district
upazila, were present at the rally. With the help of the then Deputy Commissioner
and Superintendent of Police, Awami League leaders and activists ambushed the
BNP sit-in program, and the police fired rubber bullets and tear gas. The leaders and
activists ran in all directions in fear of their lives. The accused indiscriminately beat
Badini's husband, the deceased Abdur Rashid Arefin, and injured him with sharp
weapons with the intention of killing him. At one point, he fell to the ground. When
Nuruzzaman Babu went to rescue him, he was beaten up and left bleeding. Later,
when the police and Awami League leaders and activists left, Abdur Rashid Arefin
and Nuruzzaman Babu were rescued and taken to the hospital, where the doctor on
duty declared Abdur Rashid dead.
Nuruzzaman Babu was given primary treatment and transferred to Rangpur Medical
College. He has five stitches on his head. The accused entered the party office,
vandalized and burned the furniture. This caused a loss of six lakh 59 thousand taka.
The plaintiff could not file a case until now due to fear of the then deposed dictatorial
government and fear of loss of life.
