July 36: Nation Commemorates Historic Mass Uprising Ending 16 Years of Autocratic Rule
Today marks the historic ‘July Mass Uprising Day,’ popularly known as ‘July 36,’ commemorating the unprecedented mass movement in 2024 that ended over 15 years of fascist rule under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. On this day last year, a massive uprising led by students and the general public forced the resignation and exile of the autocratic leader, bringing an end to her 16-year chairmanship.
The day has since been declared a public holiday and is celebrated nationwide with various events honoring the sacrifice of the martyrs. Early this morning, wreaths were laid at the ‘July Martyrs’ Memorial’ across 64 districts. People gathered at religious places to offer prayers in memory of those who lost their lives during the uprising.
In the capital, the ‘July Rejuvenation Program’ began at Manik Mia Avenue with preparations complete for sound, lighting, and security measures. The main event is scheduled for 5 pm at the South Plaza of the National Parliament, where Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus will read out the ‘July Declaration.’
Following the declaration, a special drone show will light up the sky at 7:30 pm, followed by a musical performance by a renowned band at 8 pm. The entire program will be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television, allowing citizens across the country to participate in the historic commemoration.
The July 36 uprising is now recognized as a defining moment in Bangladesh’s history, symbolizing the people’s resilience and determination to reclaim democracy from authoritarian rule.
