Janata Bank PLC has denied reports that its website was hacked or targeted by a cyberattack, saying the temporary shutdown was part of precautionary security measures taken in response to global cybersecurity alerts.
In a clarification issued on Sunday (October 25, 2026), the state-owned bank said reports published in various media outlets and online portals under headlines such as “Janata Bank Website Hit by Cyberattack” were not true.
No such incident has occurred,” the bank said, rejecting reports that its main server had been hacked or subjected to a cyberattack.
The bank explained that additional security measures had been introduced following the identification of two serious security vulnerabilities in PHP, a widely used programming language.
The measures were taken in response to joint security advisories issued by the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) and international organisations, prompting Bangladesh Bank and other major financial institutions in the country to strengthen their cybersecurity arrangements.
As part of these precautionary steps, Janata Bank temporarily took its website offline for general users on public holidays starting Thursday (October 22). The website was subsequently brought back online, according to the clarification.
The bank urged media outlets to take the actual circumstances into account and rejected the reports suggesting that its website or main server had been compromised.
