B Mirror Report : Workers of a garment factory named Jamuna Denim Limited clashed with police in the Konabari Metro Police Station area of Gazipur. The chase and counter-chase incident took place on Saturday morning, leaving at least 10 people injured, including police personnel.
According to police and workers, employees of Jamuna Denim gathered in front of the factory with eight-point demands and staged a protest to press for their implementation. After receiving information, industrial police arrived at the scene but failed to persuade the workers to clear the Konabari–Kashimpur regional road.
Tensions escalated following a heated exchange between police and workers, leading to a chase and counter-chase. At one stage, police fired several rounds of tear gas to disperse the protesters. As a result, at least 10 people, including police officers, were injured.
Several workers, speaking on condition of anonymity, said their demands included the mandatory resignation of director Kajol Kanti, payment of outstanding annual leave dues by January 25, a tiffin allowance of Tk 50, and a night duty allowance of Tk 150 for work performed after 10:00pm. They also demanded a Tk 1,000 attendance bonus for all workers, from helpers to operators, among the eight demands.
The factory authorities declined to speak to journalists about the incident. Following the clashes between police and workers, the management announced the indefinite closure of the factory.
Inspector Morshed Zaman of Gazipur Industrial Police-2, Konabari Zone, said the workers were asked to clear the regional road after blocking it. He alleged that workers threw bricks and stones at the police, prompting officers to fire several rounds of tear gas to disperse them. Additional police forces have been deployed in and around the factory area.
