Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has said that the appointment of an “unqualified individual” as chairman of Islami Bank through what he described as a conspiracy could undermine the institution and trigger a wider crisis of confidence in the country’s banking sector.
Speaking during the 13th Jatiya Sangsad’s second session and the 2026–27 budget session, chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed on Tuesday (June 9), he alleged that Islami Bank had previously been damaged by the use of S Alam Group during the Sheikh Hasina government and claimed there are renewed attempts to restore that influence.
Shafiqur Rahman said Islami Bank is one of the country’s largest financial institutions, and any damage to it could have a ripple effect across the banking sector, eroding public trust.
Responding to remarks by the Home Minister, he also commented on allegations involving a Tk 700 crore loan allegedly spent on elections, saying he would personally reward the minister with a medal if the claim is proven.
