Investment Funds in the Stock Market: A New Proposal for Growth

Special correspondent:The capital market regulator Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has proposed to increase the term and size of the 200-crore fund of banks for investing in the stock market. At the same time, a request has been made to increase the size of the fund by 300 crore taka and extend its term for the next 5 years.

BSEC Chairman Khandaker Rashed Maqsood made this proposal in a meeting held with Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan Ai Mansur. At the same time, he also sought various types of policy support from the central bank for the development of the stock market. Various issues related to the development of the stock market were discussed in the meeting held at Bangladesh Bank.

A special fund of 200 crore taka has been formed in 2020 with the support of the central bank for investment in the stock market. Its term is scheduled to expire next February. Along with extending the term for another five years, the BSEC said that the size of the fund will be increased.

The meeting sought Bangladesh Bank’s assistance in bringing good public sector companies to the market, as well as multinational and fundamentally sound companies to the market. It was also proposed to formulate a policy so that businesses or companies choose the capital market along with banks for long-term financing.

No decision was immediately given by the central bank in this regard. The issues will be discussed further and a decision will be taken later.
