The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has sanctioned over $1.3 billion in the fourth and fifth disbursements of its $4.7 billion loan package to Bangladesh.
“The IMF Executive Board has finalized the combined third and fourth reviews of Bangladesh’s arrangements under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) and Extended Fund Facility (EFF), and has approved an extension, augmentation, and rephrasing of access.
This decision grants Bangladesh immediate access to approximately $884 million,” states an IMF press release issued yesterday (23 June).
“Additionally, the IMF Executive Board has completed the combined Third and Fourth Reviews of Bangladesh’s arrangement under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), which makes available around $453 million to bolster the resilience of the Bangladesh economy against climate change,” it further states.
The IMF noted in its release that Bangladesh’s program performance has been generally satisfactory, despite facing a challenging political and economic environment and heightened downside risks.
“Pursuing the reform agenda is essential for restoring economic stability, safeguarding the vulnerable populations, and fostering inclusive and environmentally sustainable growth,” it emphasized.
Furthermore, the IMF Executive Board has approved a modification of performance criteria and has granted a waiver for the non-observance of the performance criterion concerning the non-imposition and non-intensification of exchange restrictions, citing the temporary nature of the non-observance and the implementation of corrective measures, as mentioned in the release.
