Bangladesh Bank Executive Director Md. Mojibur Rahman has been appointed as the administrator of private sector ICB Islamic Bank. The central bank appointed him as the administrator on Thursday (December 19).
A notification sent by Bangladesh Bank said that in order to ensure proper management of ICB Islamic Bank Limited and maintain the trust of depositors, Bangladesh Bank Executive Director Md. Mojibur Rahman has been appointed to temporarily exercise the powers and duties of the bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. He will be considered released from Bangladesh Bank at the end of the working day on Thursday to perform his duties as the administrator.
The bank was in trouble due to the massive loan fraud of Orion Group. Due to which, Financial Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed was appointed as the administrator in the bank in 2006 when he was the then governor. However, there was no improvement in the situation at ICB Islamic Bank.
On Wednesday (December 18), the bank’s officials blocked and expelled the Managing Director (MD) of ICB Islamic Bank, Mohammad Shafiq bin Abdullah. Since 10 am that day, managers of 33 branches of the bank blocked him at the head office in Karwan Bazar.
The protesting bank managers said that even though Bangladesh Bank did not re-employ him (MD Shafiq bin Abdullah), he was forcibly working in the office. We want his expulsion.
