Jhalakathi Correspondent: On Monday, May 5, 2025, residents of Kirttipasha Union in Jhalakathi Sadar Upazila organized a human chain in front of the Jhalakathi Press Club, protesting alleged derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by local resident Apan Acharya and demanding his prosecution. The demonstrators also called for the expulsion of Anisuzzaman Chopol, president of the local BNP unit, accusing him of supporting Apon Acharya.
The hour-long protest saw participation from over a hundred men and women from various walks of life. Speakers at the event expressed deep outrage over the alleged comments, urging authorities to take immediate action against Apon Acharya and to remove Chopol from his political position.
On Wednesday morning, May 14, posters appeared in various parts of Jhalakathi Sadar Upazila, demanding justice for the alleged blasphemy. The posters, attributed to the “Tawhidi Janata,” labeled Apon Acharya as a “scoundrel” and accused Chopol of extortion and holding the local community hostage. They called upon the Jhalakathi district BNP and other concerned parties to take appropriate action.
The incident has sparked significant tension in the area, with community members demanding swift and decisive measures. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
