Healthcare Crisis: RMO’s Ancestral Rights Over Hospital Leave Patients Stranded

Imran Shailkupa Correspondent: Dr. Abdullah Al Mamun, RMO of Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex, has been accused of widespread irregularities and corruption. The majority of the people of the upazila have various complaints against him.

Since joining Shailkupa Hospital as a Resident Medical Officer (RMO), he has turned the healthcare institution into a paradise of corruption. Several patients, their relatives, and locals who came to the hospital for treatment, who did not wish to be named, said,

RMO Dr. Abdullah Al Mamun takes commission from most clinics and diagnostic centers. As a result, he intimidates even the mildly ill patients and forces them to go to the clinic of their choice. He stops all operations at the hospital and sends patients to clinic businessmen, where he goes and performs operations himself.

He mostly visits patients in his quarters. There are allegations that he also takes money to see patients admitted to the hospital.

He prevented any other doctor from going on rounds in the hospital. He himself went on rounds with clinic brokers. To get the clinic’s commission, he imposed numerous unnecessary tests on the patients. On the basis of RMO, the brokers forcibly collected blood and took it to the clinic and diagnostic center. After conducting nominal tests, they imposed the burden of bills on the patients. Many also claim that Shailkupa Hospital has now become a business enterprise of the RMO.

There are allegations that the price of the test is fixed on each prescription and sent to the preferred clinic diagnostic center. There are also frequent allegations that patients admitted to the hospital and coming to the emergency department are called to their official chambers for visits.

Also, he will conduct the rounds alone at the hospital, no other doctor will be allowed to go on the rounds. The commission for the test will be paid only if the designated clinic brokers go on the rounds.

On the other hand, they embezzle large sums of money by prescribing medicines from various low-quality pharmaceutical companies. There are also numerous allegations against him. Ordinary working people are being deprived of medical services because the RMO of Shailkupa Hospital has opened a private chamber in his quarters to visit patients.

No one dares to speak out for fear that a certain person is involved in the medical trade by tarnishing their reputation. If anyone does speak out, they are threatened with assault charges and even death by the Lalit gang. Hundreds of such allegations have been made against him.

When I went to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex RMO Dr. Abdullah Al Mamun’s quarters to take his statement on this matter, I found him in a private chamber. There, he was busy with hundreds of patients. Seeing the journalist in this situation, he became angry.

When journalists tried to take his statement, he tried unsuccessfully to frame the journalists as extortionists.

In this regard, Dr. Rashed Al Mamun, Health and Family Planning Officer of Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex, said, “All doctors working in the hospital have the right to conduct rounds. It is very unfortunate that outsiders, clinic brokers and people from pharmaceutical companies are present during the rounds.”
