B Mirror Desk : Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur has declared that new Tk1,000, Tk50, and Tk20 banknotes will be introduced into circulation prior to Eid-ul-Adha.

The new notes will not display any human portraits; instead, they will highlight natural landscapes and traditional landmarks of Bangladesh, as stated by Mansur during a conversation with journalists after an event at the PKSF building in Dhaka today (24 May).

The upcoming banknotes that the government plans to issue before Eid-ul-Adha will feature images of mosques, temples, historical sites, and natural scenery, while avoiding any depictions of individuals, according to Mansur.”Three new denominations will soon be available in the market – Tk1,000, Tk50, and Tk20. The public will have the opportunity to see these new notes before Eid-ul-Adha. These notes will not include any human images,” the governor remarked.

Ahsan further noted, “These notes will showcase some of our natural landscapes and historical monuments.”When inquired about the types of monuments that would be depicted on these notes, the BB governor responded, “Some historically significant monuments will be featured, whether they are mosques or temples. We are not making any distinctions in this regard.”

Previously, on 21 May, Bangladesh Bank Executive Director Arif Hossain Khan mentioned that the designs for the new notes had already been finalized.”No note will display a complete human portrait. Instead, the new notes will embody themes such as the July uprising martyrs, youth, the Sundarbans, and various aspects of Bangladesh’s heritage and culture,” he stated.

As reported by the media, the new Tk20 note will showcase images of the Kantaji Temple and Buddhist temples. The Tk50 note will feature Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin’s famine painting and the Atia Mosque. The Tk 1,000 note will illustrate the Bangabhaban and the National Martyrs’ Memorial.The newly designed notes will be released in phases.

Historically, Bangladesh launched its own paper currency on 4 March 1972, following its independence.The initial banknote, which included a map, was a Tk1 denomination. In 1973, Bangladesh released Tk5, Tk10, and Tk100 notes.

Following this, Tk50 and Tk500 notes were launched in 1976. The Tk20 note came out in 1979, and the Tk2 note was introduced in 1988. On July 17, 2009, the highest denomination banknote, the Tk1,000, was unveiled. The latest addition to the currency was the Tk200 note in 2020.
