The government has removed Md. Zakir Hossain Chowdhury from his position as Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank, ending his contractual appointment about 14 months before its scheduled expiry.
A notification issued on Monday by the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance said the remaining term of Zakir Hossain Chowdhury’s contract had been cancelled with immediate effect.
Zakir Hossain was appointed as deputy governor on Sept. 8, 2024, under a three-year contract that was due to run until September 2027.
The notification, signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Md. Safi Ullah, did not specify the reason for the early termination.
At the same time, the government appointed Bangladesh Bank Executive Director Md. Anisur Rahman as the new deputy governor on a three-year contractual term.
