Govt Clears Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance

The interim government today approved the draft of the Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance 2025, paving the way to establish a separate secretariat for the higher court, a move aimed at ensuring the full independence of the judiciary.

The approval came during a meeting of the Council of Advisers chaired by Chief Adviser Prof. Mohammad Yunus at the Chief Adviser’s Office.

Briefing reporters at the Foreign Service Academy, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul said the ordinance received final clearance in the council meeting. “You can say that today we have completed the full implementation of the verdict in the Masdar Hossain case and taken the final step toward establishing full judicial independence,” he said.

Nazrul highlighted that civil society has long demanded the creation of a separate secretariat for the Supreme Court over the past 20–30 years to ensure judicial autonomy. “Today is a historic day for us. Many political parties have given assurances in the past, but we have now reached a meaningful milestone,” he added, noting that the Council of Advisers had previously approved the proposed law in principle.

The establishment of a separate Supreme Court secretariat was among the recommendations of the Judicial Reforms Commission and the National Consensus Commission. “All parties agreed during the discussions of the National Consensus Commission that a separate secretariat for the Supreme Court is essential to achieve full independence of the judiciary,” Nazrul said.

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said the council meeting had eight items on its agenda, with the Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance 2025 being the most significant.
