India’s border connection with Bangladesh’s prime seaport, Chittagong, is set to be shortened soon. The widening and improvement of the 38 km Barairhat-Heyako-Ramgarh road is in full swing. It will connect the seaport port with the Ramgarh-Sabroom land port on the Indian border.
This infrastructure change is being implemented with the Line of Credit (LoC) of India given to Bangladesh. It was signed in 2017 in Delhi, and later, Indian contractor Ashoka Buildcon Limited was awarded the work of widening the road.
Immigration Check Post as well as Customs House construction has also been completed with the hope of increasing imports, exports, and travel. The establishments are waiting for their inauguration soon.
The project director of Ramgarh-Sabroom land port said the Indian delegation recently visited Ramgarh-Sabroom land port to see on-site preparations for launching the immigration point.
“It is expected that the Prime Minister will soon fix the day and date for the inauguration of the port, ” he added.
Barairhat-Heyako-Ramgarh road construction project budget in Mirsarai has been estimated at taka 1100 crore. Here, the Bangladesh government promised BDT 513 crores, and India equivalently promised BDT 595 crores. The project includes nine bridges of 249.20 meters, 23 culverts of 108 meters, and 38 km of roads of 38 feet in width. After this road is open, goods will go to India in just 3 hours using the Ramgarh land port, which is 112 km from the Chittagong seaport.
Products manufactured in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpanagar, Bangladesh’s biggest SEZ located at Mirsarai, will also be easily exported to India. The Barairhat-Heyako-Ramgarh road will also be connected under construction to the Matarbari deep-sea port.
