Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus said, last year, Bangladesh witnessed political change through student-led mass movements. As a result, our government took charge. Now we are preparing to hold elections that are free, fair, acceptable and inclusive.
He made these remarks as a keynote speaker at the “Nikkei Forum: 30th Future of Asia” conference held in Tokyo, Japan on Thursday (May 29).
Speaking at the conference held at the Fuji Room of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Professor Yunus said, “The world is now passing through a turbulent time—where global conflicts, climate change, economic inequality and technological crises have challenged our future. Asia must now lead the way for peace, cooperation and inclusive development.”
In his speech, Professor Yunus highlighted the conflicts in South and Southeast Asia, including Ukraine, Gaza, Myanmar and congratulated the leaders of the countries concerned for reaching ceasefires. He called for the establishment of lasting peace in South Asia.
Speaking about Bangladesh, he said, “We have sheltered over a million Rohingya on humanitarian grounds and are contributing to global peace by participating in UN peacekeeping missions.”
He outlined his ‘Three Zeros’ vision—zero poverty, zero unemployment, and zero net carbon emissions—and said, “Humans are not born to suffer. Every human being has unlimited potential. Our responsibility is to unlock that potential.”
Dr. Yunus added, “Business should not only be done for profit, but also to solve social problems. This requires initiatives like ‘social business’, where human well-being is the key.”
At the conference, he outlined seven proposals for a sustainable and humane future for Asia: shifting from interdependence to cooperation, strengthening economic and technological cooperation, ensuring inclusiveness, empowerment, and sustainable development, increasing investment in people, moving towards a green transition, developing youth as entrepreneurs, and providing ethical leadership and compassionate guidance.
