DSE turnover falls to five-month low

Trading turnover on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) fell to its lowest level in more than five months on Thursday, despite a modest rise in the benchmark index.

The DSEX, the DSE’s main index, gained 16 points to close at 5,656. The index had declined 3 points on Tuesday, 79 points on Monday and 64 points on Sunday. In the previous week, the index had also fallen 134 points during six consecutive sessions before gaining 16 points on Thursday.

Turnover on the DSE stood at Tk 467.01 crore on Thursday, down Tk 3.78 crore, or around 1%, from Tk 470.79 crore in the previous session. The day’s turnover was the lowest since March 17, or in more than five months.

Of the 393 companies traded on the DSE, prices of 185, or 47.07%, advanced, while 144, or 36.64%, declined. The prices of 64 companies, or 16.28%, remained unchanged.

Meanwhile, turnover on the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) stood at Tk 21.23 crore. Of the 171 companies traded, 71 advanced, 80 declined and 20 remained unchanged.

The CSE’s broad-based CASPI index gained five points to close at 15,167. On the previous trading day, CSE turnover was Tk 4.01 crore and the index had fallen 94 points.
