DSE Slips on Third Trading Day as Turnover Falls

The capital market had shown signs of recovery at the start of the New Year. During the first two trading days of the year, prices of most shares rose, along with gains in indices and turnover.

However, on Monday (5 January), the third trading day of the New Year and the second working day of the week, prices of most shares and units declined. As a result, the main index and the blue-chip index of the country’s premier bourse, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), fell, while trading volume also decreased.

In the recently concluded year 2025, prices of a majority of shares declined on most trading days, causing all market indices to fall over the year. The DSE’s main index, DSEX, dropped by 351 points or 6.73 percent to close at 4,865 points. Although the index saw a strong rebound in the first two trading days of the New Year, it again recorded a decline on the third trading day.

Market analysis shows that trading on Monday began with price increases in shares and units of most companies on the DSE. However, by the end of the session, most securities moved into the losing list. At the close, prices of shares and units of 143 companies rose, while 189 declined and 57 remained unchanged.

Due to the decline in most securities, the DSE’s main index DSEX fell by 10 points from the previous day to 4,955 points. Among the other indices, the DSE Shariah Index remained unchanged at 1,006 points, while the DSE-30 index comprising 30 selected blue-chip companies fell by 1 point to 1,886 points.

Alongside the fall in indices, trading turnover on the DSE also declined. Total transactions amounted to Tk 485.82 crore, compared to Tk 537.41 crore in the previous trading day (Sunday), marking a decrease of Tk 51.59 crore.

Meanwhile, at the other bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), the overall index CASPI rose by 20 points to 13,839 points. Of the 160 companies that participated in trading, prices of 66 increased, 76 declined, and 18 remained unchanged. Total turnover at the CSE stood at Tk 8.68 crore, compared to Tk 26.90 crore in the previous trading day.
