Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has instructed district commissioners (DCs) to carry out their duties in the upcoming election and referendum with complete honesty, neutrality, and dedication. He said that this election is not a conventional one—it is an election to save the nation.
He made these remarks on Monday while addressing 50 newly appointed district commissioners along with DCs from all 64 districts at the Chief Adviser’s Office.
The Chief Adviser said that the upcoming election is not just an election to form a government for the next five years; the inclusion of a referendum makes it even more significant. “This is a completely different kind of election. The nation has witnessed many farcical elections, and we must play our role to move beyond that memory,” he said.
“This is a post-uprising election; an election meant to fulfill the spirit of the mass uprising. Through this election, the course of the nation for the next century will be determined,” he added.
Stressing the crucial role of district commissioners in this election, he said there is no room for failure. The nation will be reborn through this election, and DCs will serve as midwives in that process.
Addressing the district commissioners, he said, “Learn everything you need to know. You must make the election both festive and peaceful.”
He reminded them that a large number of young and female voters—who were eligible but unable to exercise their voting rights for the past 15 years—will be participating this time.
He said international observers have already shown strong interest in the upcoming election. “They are eager to see how this election unfolds,” he added.
The Chief Adviser said, “Making this election successful is our commitment to the mass uprising. This election is a major mission, and we must win this mission.”
“To survive as an independent nation, we must win this battle,” he emphasized.
The meeting, moderated by Cabinet Division Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid, was also attended by Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud, Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, and Law Adviser Professor Asif Nazrul.
