BSEC pushes to bring large company to stock market

B Mirror Report: The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) is stepping up efforts to list large public interest companies on the stock market, giving the initiative top priority to strengthen the country’s capital market.

BSEC Chairman Khondoker Rashed Maqsood made the remarks at the sixth monthly coordination meeting with market stakeholders held on Sunday (April 5) at the commission’s multipurpose hall in Agargaon, Dhaka. He said cooperation from the government and all stakeholders is essential to successfully implement the plan.

The meeting was attended by BSEC commissioners Md. Mohsin Chowdhury, Md. Ali Akbar, Farzana Lalarukh, and Md. Saifuddin, along with senior officials and representatives from various capital market institutions.

The chairman said key legal reforms have already been completed through three major regulations: the Margin Rules 2025, Mutual Fund Rules 2025, and Public Offer of Equity Securities Rules 2025. He added that a new corporate governance code will be introduced soon.

According to a press release signed by BSEC Director and spokesperson Md. Abul Kalam, the meeting included discussions on market development initiatives, plans to upgrade the market from frontier to emerging status, implementation of e-KYC, launching a commodity exchange, and improving institutional coordination.

Other issues discussed included strengthening corporate governance, enhancing the capacity of Central Counterparty Bangladesh Limited (CCBL), expanding investor education, introducing new products, preventing market manipulation, supporting investors through the Investor Protection Fund, and ensuring accuracy in price-sensitive information.

The meeting also emphasized resolving negative equity and unrealized losses, as well as boosting investor confidence and protection.

Among the participants were CCBL Chairman Major General (retd.) Md. Wahid-uz-Zaman, DSE Brokers Association of Bangladesh (DBA) President Saiful Islam, Dhaka Stock Exchange Managing Director Nuzhat Anwar, and Chittagong Stock Exchange Managing Director Md. Saifur Rahman Majumdar.
