BRAC Bank Extends $95.77 Million Loan to MJL Bangladesh for Acquisition of Aframax Oil Tankers

B Mirror Report:  BRAC Bank has extended a foreign currency loan of US$95.77 million (equivalent to Tk 1,170 crore) to MJL Bangladesh Limited (Mobil Jamuna) for the acquisition of two ocean-going Aframax-class oil tankers—the largest vessels under the Bangladeshi flag to date. This represents the single largest foreign currency loan extended by a private bank in Bangladesh’s shipping and petroleum infrastructure sector.

The agreement between BRAC Bank and MJL Bangladesh was recently formalized through a signing ceremony, as announced by the bank in an official press release.

Under this financing arrangement, MJL Bangladesh has already incorporated the MT Omera Galaxy, an Aframax-class oil tanker, into its fleet. With a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of approximately 116,000, the MT Omera Galaxy is now the largest Bangladeshi-flagged vessel operating at sea. MJL Bangladesh, a key player in the maritime transport sector, provides logistical support to both domestic and international petroleum companies.

In addition to this acquisition, the company has initiated the procurement of a second Aframax tanker, MT Omera Liberty, currently under construction at a globally renowned shipyard. The signing ceremony was held on September 2 at Mobil House in Dhaka. BRAC Bank’s Managing Director and CEO, Tarek Refat Ullah Khan, and MJL Bangladesh’s CEO, Md. Mukul Hossain, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations. The event was also attended by BRAC Bank Chairperson Mehriyar M Hasan, MJL Bangladesh Managing Director Azam J Chowdhury, Director Tanzil Chowdhury, and other senior officials.

This strategic financing initiative is expected to significantly enhance Bangladesh’s maritime logistics infrastructure and support international trade growth.
