Monsur Pabna Correspondent: Once primarily known for agriculture and fisheries, Gaznar Beel in Sujanagar Upazila of Pabna is now emerging as a recreational hotspot, drawing visitors for its natural beauty and expanding infrastructure.
On Friday, September 19, a group led by Ali Akbar Miah Raju, Bengali instructor at Pabna Technical School & College, organized a boat cruise that highlighted the beel’s growing popularity. Participants, including professionals from various sectors such as education, journalism, engineering, and business, enjoyed activities like boat rides and swimming in the clear waters. The group traveled from Pabna city to Sujanagar and boarded a motorboat near Khoyran Bridge. The event included Jumu’ah prayers at a local mosque and a hosted lunch in Shripur village. Notably, Gaznar Beel consists of 16 interconnected wetlands, spans 31 square kilometers, and plays a vital role in local onion production and freshwater fish supply.
Infrastructure developments, including submersible roads and bridges, have improved access and boosted tourism—especially during the monsoon season. The area’s transformation, supported by a BDT 413 crore multipurpose development project initiated in 2010, now attracts large crowds, temporary food stalls, and rental services for boats and speedboats. Locals and officials alike see Gaznar Beel as a model for eco-tourism and economic development in rural Bangladesh.
