Black money whitening not admirable

BM Desk: The potential to whiten black money in the proposed national budget is not a respectable approach, according to Finance Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, who also hinted that this item might be revised if necessary.

“There isn’t a general provision for whitening black money in the planned budget for fiscal year 2025-26,” he said, adding that if someone has money that hasn’t been reported, there is a clause that requires them to disclose it under specific circumstances. Higher tax rates for investments in real estate and land are one way the interim government has provided opportunities for black money whitening in the proposed budget.

On Tuesday, Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed was speaking during a press conference following the budget in the city’s Osmani Memorial auditorium.

Dr. Abdur Rahman Khan, the chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), spoke at the event and stated that the proposed budget does not specifically include any provisions for legalizing black money. “The budget contains no special provisions for dark money. However, by paying extra taxes in a few designated sectors, people will be permitted to use their unreported money,” he stated.
