In the last 15 and a half years of the Awami League government, various influential individuals and institutions have taken loans from banks. One of them is Salman F Rahman, adviser on private industry and investment to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Beximco Group, owned by this villain Salman F Rahman, who is known as “Dervesh” in the stock market, has taken more than 36 thousand crores of loans anonymously from seven public and private institutions.
He took loan from these seven banks without adequate collateral. Again, despite not repaying the loan for years, it remained default-free with rescheduling and restructuring facilities.
The sector stakeholders say that such benefits have been given to Beximco Group companies due to political considerations. They said that loans were taken from banks by using political power. No rules were followed to withdraw this money. Besides, adequate security was not kept. Bangladesh Bank was silent even knowing this. So these loans now pose a risk. Most loans carry a risk of default.
Officials of all institutions say that Salman F Rahman was so politically influential that even if installments were not paid, nothing could be said about his institutions. Bangladesh Bank was also knowingly silent. Therefore, these debts have remained uncollected for a long time. Most of these loans are defaultable. As the loans are given without adequate collateral, there is concern about the recovery of this money.
