Raihan Ahmed, Mymensingh: Named after the trailblazer of women’s rights, Mahishi Nari Begum Rokeya, the Begum Rokeya Training Center was founded in Mymensingh to promote self-employment among impoverished, unemployed, and educated women. It commenced operations on November 6, 1997, in the Ganda area of Digha, Mymensingh. The center’s primary mission is to generate job opportunities for women through skill-based training, while also focusing on their economic and social empowerment.
Currently, the training center offers programs in four different trades. It provides excellent hostel accommodations for its trainees, who can receive training at no cost to them, as there are no admission fees. Residential trainees benefit from complimentary lodging and meals, along with a monthly stipend. Annually, around 600 individuals participate in the training programs.
Many former trainees have reported that the skills they acquired have led to job opportunities both locally and internationally, enabling them to support their families. Mahbubur Rashid, the deputy director of the Begum Rokeya Training Center, stated, “Our primary aim is to empower women to become self-sufficient and not a burden on society.” He added that efforts are underway to address the shortage of skilled trainers, introduce five new trades, and enhance training quality by leveraging existing facilities.
