BB told not to input confidential data into AI tools

B Mirror Report : Bangladesh Bank has instructed its officials and employees not to enter any confidential or sensitive banking information into artificial intelligence (AI) tools under any circumstances, citing concerns over data security and cross-border information transfers.

The directive, issued through an office order on June 28, comes amid growing use of AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and DeepSeek for official tasks including drafting notes, data analysis, and report preparation.

The central bank warned that using such tools could expose sensitive financial information to cross-border data transfer risks, potentially leading to data leaks, policy risks, and cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

Under the directive, officials must obtain prior approval from the appropriate authority before using AI tools for official note drafting, policy formulation, or data analysis. Employees have also been instructed not to use any office-related information when accessing AI tools for personal purposes and to strictly comply with existing information security and cybersecurity policies.

Bangladesh Bank said the directive has been issued to promote the responsible use of AI technology and strengthen information security. The order took effect immediately upon approval by the competent authority.
